An early Zionist, Schatz traveled to Jerusalem in 1906 where he founded the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts, whose products, ranging from paintings to metalwork to woodwork to textiles embodied an artistic style suitable for the new Jewish nation. Under Schatz's leadership, the movement successfully blended the exoticism of the Orient and the biblical and Jewish-Zionist symbols with the more "international" Arts & Crafts aesthetic to produce a very special art.
