Jan Janssonius (Dutch, 1588-1664). "Firma et Novum Regnum Granatense et Popayan", published in Amsterdam c.1636, copperplate cartographical engraving with Dutch text to verso, inscribed below title cartouche "Amstelodami Joannes Janssonius excudit". Likely first edition engraving showing a map of South America including the Isthmus of Panama and the northwestern continental region including most of present-day Colombia and part of Venezuela with numerous settlements and towns noted as well as the Caribbean Sea and the South Pacific Ocean, the map based on the cartography of Hessel Gerritsz (Dutch, 1581-1632) and forming a prototype for South American cartography throughout the rest of the century. Sheet size approximately 17.625" x 22.875".
