Daguerreotype Of A Portrait Of Samuel Hahnemann, sixth plate, in leather case. Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) is credited as the father of homeopathy. Born in Meissen, he practiced medicine in Leipzig, where he translated Cullen's Materia Medica , leading him to theorize that small doses of drugs which produced the symptoms of disease in healthy persons should be used to treat those actually suffering from that disease. This unorthodox approach earned him the ire of the medical community, especially the apothecaries, and they caused him to leave. He eventually settled in Paris. His treatments gained quite a bit of popularity in the 19th century (hardly surprising considering some of the alternatives at the time) but fell from grace during the 20th century, only to make a come back latter.
