Clemens, Samuel (1835-1910), Date 1601. Conversation as it Was by the Social Fireside, In the TIme of the Tudors , [West Point, 1882], "Done att Ye Academie Preffe, MDCCCLXXXII", 4to, with later marbled boards, one of fifty printed, one of twenty on wove paper, (title page with small tear). BAL 338 and 3407.Note: This short but ribald story is a parody of manners and speech as it existed in the Elizabethan period. It was written by Twain 1876 and given to his friend the Reverend Joseph Twichell who circulated copies amongst his friends. As the general public became slowly aware of the existence of the story, demand for a printing grew. This edition in 1882 is the first authorized edition by Twain. It is noteworthy that any lifetime edition of this farce is very rare.
