(Perry and Japan) Interesting and historically important Captain's Copy book from the U. S.S. Saratoga, May 5th-1853 to September 7, 1854, 4to, detailing copies of all correspndence sent by Commander W.S. Walker, in which are official depatches and reports to Admiral M.C. Perry, Commander H. A. Adams, the consul in Shanghai and officials in Washington, approximately ninety-six letter, in a half calf binding with marbled boards. Note: The USS Saratoga was assigned duty to Perry's fleet (The Black Fleet) which opening trade with Japan in 1854. Also, seeing duty in Shanghai, this log details the ongoing violence and rebellion being carried out in China as well as other happenings in Japan and the South China Seas. After the treaty was signed, Perry entrusted the treaty to the Commander of the Saratoga until meeting in the Sandwich Islands.
