Tufts Automatic Crystal Fountain, Boston, late 19th century, with cobalt blue glass bowl over twin bulbs, on cast-brass Aesthetic style frame with fountain pipes, signed J. W. Tufts, Boston Patented 1871 , on marble base, ht. 21 1/2 in. (crack in bowl). Sold as a combination perfume dispenser and air freshener, the Automatic Crystal Fountain is based on the discoveries of Hero of Alexandra. It was also offered in Britain as Storer's Patent Fountain, made by the London firm of Defries & Sons, and sold by E. Rimmel in the Strand.
