Pair of Mahogany and Mahogany Veneer George III Firescreens, England, c. 1810, "The Flight into Egypt" with Joseph, Mary and Jesus is depicted in one, the other, called "The Return" depicts the angel telling Joseph it is safe to return; both are worked in chenille silk threads on a silk ground and use water color facial features and sky, (imperfections), ht. 54 1/4, wd. 15 in. Note: Herod's cruel jealousy led to Joseph's "Flight into Egypt" with Mary and the infant Jesus, where they waited until the death of this King. They then returned and settled in Nazareth in lower Galilee.
