Attributed to William Kennedy (New England and Baltimore, 1818-1870) Portrait of a Lady. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, c. 1845, the dark-haired lady wears a brown dress trimmed with lace and is flanked by a column on the left and drapery on the right, 25 1/2 x 20 1/2 in., in original gilt molded frame. Condition: good, unrestored, one tear. Note: William Kennedy, a member of the Prior-Hamblin School, worked as a portrait painter in New Bedford, Massachusetts; Ledyard, Connecticut; and Berwick, Maine. At mid-century, he went to Baltimore. This portrait includes many of his painting characteristics: sloping shoulders, a nose with a flat ridge and small pursed lips separated by a reddish brown line.
