Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 35 x 29 in., in its original gilt and wooden frame. Condition: Minor touch up, re-varnished, unlined. Provenance: The sitter Enos Adams (b. March 23, 1816, d. May 21, 1896) is the son of Enos and Sarah D. Adams, according to the penciled inscription on the stretcher. N.B. Erastus Salisbury Field, who was born in Leverett, Massachusetts, a hill town in the Connecticut River Valley, painted rural society from the 1820s thru mid-1850s in Massachusetts, Connecticut, southern Vermont and eastern New York. In 1824 Field studied with Samuel F.B. Morse in New York City. Field's style became more assured in the 1830s with softer modeling and assured brushwork. This portrait appears to be from that period.
