Queen Anne Tiger Maple Desk/Bookcase, Exeter, New Hampshire area, last half 18th century, the top section with molded scrolled cornice above two hinged doors with molded tombstone raised panels, opens to an interior of eight valanced compartments, two adjustable shelves, and three drawers, the lower section with slant lid opening to an interior of a central tombstone prospect door flanked by secret drawers, four valanced compartments, and two short drawers, all above a projecting short drawer and two compartments, the case of thumb-molded graduated drawers on bracket feet, retains 19th century grain paint, (loss of height and other elements), ht. 85 3/4, wd. 35 1/2, dp. 17 3/4 in. Provenance: Accompanying documents indicate the consignor purchased this desk/bookcase in June of 1964 from Miss Winifred Hinde of Penacook, New Hampshire. She was the daughter of Levi R. Hinde and Martha Gilman of Panacook and a direct descendant of Edward Gilman, an original settler of Exeter, New Hampshire. The name John Taylor Gilman, a Governor of New Hampshire in the year 1801, is inscribed in an inner drawer. The family was originally involved in seafaring and later in agricultural pursuits, but always was part of governmental affairs in or around Exeter. This piece was likely made in Exeter, New Hampshire.
