Federal Gilt and Eglomise Looking Glass, Boston or North Shore area, Massachusetts, 1805-15, the entablature with its attached spherules overhangs a reverse painted on glass neoclassical female figure seated in a chair with surrounding red drapery above lightly beveled mirror glass flanked by turned split baluster columns, original paint and gilt, (minor imperfections), ht. 33 1/4, wd. 20 in. Provenance: Contemporary chalk inscription on the white pine backboard reads, "A. Whidden." Michael Whidden (1731-1818) is listed as a joiner and cabinet maker in Portsmouth, New Hampshire (1752-1816) in Portsmouth Furniture by Brock Jobe et al, SPNEA, 1993. A later penciled inscription reads "Poly Osgood, Raymond, N.H."
