Federal Mahogany Veneer Fan-Inlaid Card Table, attributed to William Whitehead (w. 1792-1800), New York, New York, 1790-1800, the demilune mahogany veneer top with a half-round lightly shaded fourteen-rayed fan and crossbanded mahogany veneer which is enclosed with stringing outlining the top above a three-paneled string inlaid skirt, each with an oval in stringing, above five legs each topped by a twelve-point patera and inlaid with v-shape and looped stringing used with three bellflowers above cuff inlays, old surface, (some repairs and imperfections), ht. 29 1/4, wd. 36, dp. at center 17 7/8 in. Provenance: Family descent from Joseph Grinnell (1788-1885) who was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and moved to New York city in 1809 to pursue his mercantile pursuits. Later he returned to New Bedford where he became president of the First National Bank and later president of the New Bedford and Taunton railroad, and the Wamsutta Cotton Mills. Subsequently he became a member of Congress. Note: William Whitehead was at 75 Pearl Street, New York city, from 1794-1800.
