Attributed to George Freeman (American, 1789-1868) Pair of Portraits of a Blue-eyed Gentleman and His Wife. Mixed media including watercolor, graphite, and body white on paper, 9 x 7 in., in walnut beaded frame. Condition: The first with losses, tears, creases, abrasions, scattered fox marks, and toning, the second hinged to mat, minor tears, minor losses, and creases. N.B. Freeman was a self-taught itinerant artist born in Mansfield, Connecticut. The artist was active in Connecticut and New York State from 1808-16 when he moved to England via Canada. While in America, Freeman painted miniatures of well-known Americans such as Mrs. James Fennimore Cooper and Commodore MacDonough, a hero of the War of 1812.
