Painted and Decorated Chippendale Side Chair, Concord, Massachusetts area, 1780-90, the serpentine crest ending in raked molded terminals above the pierced crest, stay rail, rush seat, and square legs joined by square stretchers; original black paint with late 19th century fading gilt decoration and yellow painted highlights outlining the splat, (minor imperfections), ht. 39 1/4, seat ht. 17 1/2 in. Provenance: The accompanying note regarding "Made by Joseph Hosmer, Concord, Mass." is based on earlier scholarship. Original Concord families owned similar chairs.
