Carved and Engraved Powder Horn, Massachusetts, 1776, the tip being paneled extending to two raised rings, above a smooth area extending to the decoration, inscribed "IVORY SOULE Horn November: y 25 1776," depicting a large tree with many birds flanked by a hunter and deer, flowering tulip vine and geometric border, the butt fitted with a domed pine plug attached with copper nails, (small old 1-inch crack), approximate lg. 12 in. Note: Information accompanying the horn from the publication, Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War lists an Ivory Sole(?) from Barre, Massachusetts. Mayflower Families genealogical records list Ivory Soule, born at Plympton, Massachusetts, the eleventh child of Ebenezer, who with his family later moved to Hinsdale, New Hampshire. Pension files of the Revolutionary War list Ivory as a soldier from Barre, Massachusetts at enlistment, and applied for pension in 1832 at Cheshire County, New Hampshire.
