Painted Canvas Rifle Cadet Knapsack, probably Massachusetts, 1820, the flap having an American eagle with shield among stars and surrounded by an oval cloud border, above a scrolled banner inscribed "RIFLE CADET," painted in red, white, blue and gold on black ground, with two leather strap and iron buckles, the reverse with an ink inscription, "Benjamin Pope Bridgewater July 4th 1820," (minor paint losses, a wooden hanger and twine attached to the back), 13 5/8 x 13 1/4 in.
