American School, 19th Century Father Marquette Among the Native Americans. Unsigned. Watercolor on paper, 20 5/8 x 27 in., framed. Condition: Tears, abrasions. N.B. Father Jacques Marquette (1637-75) was a French explorer, Jesuit priest, and a missionary to the Indians in the French colonies in the New World. He also took part in an expedition that led to the discovery of the Mississippi River in June of 1673.
