Ovoid Handled Stoneware Jug, attributed to Joshua Letts, South Amboy, New Jersey, early 19th century, salt glazed jug with pulled strap handle decorated with cobalt blue incised profile of a Native American, dark brown glaze at handle ends, inscribed on base labels "W. Oakley Raymond Collection, South Amboy Remmy, (Indian Head)," (rim chip), ht. 15 1/2 in. Provenance: Ex-collection W. Oakley Raymond. N.B. Accompanying the jug are two early editions of the magazine THE ANTIQUARIAN . Both contain articles by W. Oakley Raymond. The January 1928 issue features an article on pp. 38-41 and 46 and is entitled "Colonial and Early American Earthenware." The jug appears in one of the photographs and is identified "...apparently J. Letts, South Amboy, New Jersey. Similar crocks are sometimes incised 'Made by J. Letts, Liberty'..." The January 1930 article on pp. 54-55 and 88 is entitled "Unmarked New York Pottery: Crolius and Remmy."
