Zedekiah Belknap (New England, 1781-1858) Portraits of Pamela Stone with Daughter Susan and John Stone, early 1830s. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, in period gold leaf frames, 27 1/4 x 22 3/4 and 23 in. Condition: Good, minor craquelure. Provenance: Family descent. Note: Pamela Stone was born in Oxford, Massachusetts, where she lived until she married John Stone of Auburn, Massachusetts, in 1825. Their daughter, Susan, who sits on her mother's lap in the portrait, was born in Auburn in 1829. Zedekiah Belknap was born in Ward, Massachusetts, now known as Auburn, home of the sitters. He began painting by 1807. The 170 portraits ascribed to him illustrate the great stylistic changes his work encompasses. This example preceded his later bold decorative style.
