Joined Paneled Inlaid Six-Board Oak and Maple Chest, Guilford, Connecticut area, 1670-1710, the oak lid opens to a cavity with lidded till and overhangs a case with recessed panel sides, sawtooth inlays and raised parquetry paneling on the facade; with applied moldings and black painted maple applied spindles and bosses interspersed among the painted and inlaid facade, old surface, (some losses including height, minor additions), ht. 20 3/4, wd. 48, dp. 20 1/8 in. Literature: Furniture of the New Haven Colony: The Seventeenth Century Style , Patricia E. Kane (The New Haven Colony Historical Society, April 1973, figure XXIII) includes an inset which pictures and describes this piece: "Inlay is an unusual decorative treatment in American 17th century furniture. Similar inlay appears on a chest found in the Douglass Pump Factory in Middletown, Connecticut but whose location is unknown." This lot is that missing piece.
