Attributed to William Jennys (American, ac. 1795-1805) Pair of Portraits of Israel Jones and Mrs. Althea Todd Jones, c. 1800. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 30 x 25 and 30 x 24 in., framed. Condition: Relined, retouched, scattered abrasions and craquelure. Note: Israel Jones was born in 1738 in Weston, Massachusetts, and died in Williamstown, Massachusetts, in 1829. Althea Todd was born in 1749 and died in 1825. They married in 1767. Note: William Jennys, a portraitist, painted throughout most of New England and New York. William and his father, Richard, worked together for seven years. William's palette was usually muted and somber with an extensive use of green and brown. In about 1800, Richard and William Jennys moved to Massachusetts where they painted portraits in the central and western part of the state, as in the case of this lot.
