Zedekiah Belknap (New England, 1781-1858) Child in White with Doll. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 26 x 23 1/2 in., in a period gold leaf frame. Condition: Lined, retouched, craquelure. Provenance: Gerald Kornblau, New York; Gregory Reynolds, Vermont; Skinner Americana sale 1274, lot 523, to a private Boston Collection. Zedekiah Belknap was born in what is now Auburn, Massachusetts. Subsequent to his graduation from Dartmouth College in 1807 he became a portrait painter working throughout Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. His style changed considerably in the forty-one years he was known to have painted. He ended his painting career in Wethersfield, Connecticut, in 1848.
