Liverpool Creamware Jug, England, early 19th century, black transfer printed, obverse "BY VIRTUE AND VALOUR WE HAVE FREED OUR COUNTRY, EXTENDED OUR COMMERCE AND LAID THE FOUNDATION OF A GREAT EMPIRE" inscribed in a ribbon (McCauley 199), depicting a Continental soldier standing with his foot on the head of the British Lion, soldiers and a sailing ship in the background, the scene surrounded by military devices; reverse with a design of an American warship, beneath the spout an oval cartouche with a young boy and his rooster, (base rim broken and repaired, two chips to spout, two cracks to body, one to base of handle, transfers and glaze wear, small areas of discoloration), ht. 9 3/4 in.
