Two Historic Transfer Decorated Staffordshire Jugs, England, early 19th century, the first yellow glazed with black printed round reserves, obverse and reverse inscribed "PEACE PLENTY" and "INDEPENDENCE," the design depicts a star and entwined ribbon wreath with names of Boston and ten states, surmounted by a large eagle and American flag, flanked by allegorical figures of Peace to the right and Plenty to the left, beneath the spout, a reserve inscribed "PEACE and PROSPERITY to AMERICA," the jug with silver lustre highlights; the second of pearlware with an American eagle beneath the spout and inscribed with a Jefferson quote, reserves on each side depicting a cherub among clouds, the jug with silver lustre decoration, (imperfections), ht. 6 3/4, 8 in., respectively. Provenance: The Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, Edward and Bertha Rose Collection of Ceramics. Sold to benefit the acquisition fund.
