Attributed to Thomas Willis (American, 19th Century) Portrait of the Schooner Carlotta. Unsigned. Mixed media including oil, silk, and velvet three-dimensional portrait on canvas, sight size 17 1/8 x 23 1/8 in., framed. Condition: Craquelure, few small scattered losses. N.B. An engraved brass plaque affixed to the frame reads "Built 1885, Designer A.C. Smith, Builder J.J. Driscoll Greenpoint, New York, Owner Henry Belknap." The artist Thomas Willis, b. 1850 in Connecticut, worked for a silk embroidery threadmaker in 1870. He used silk or satin in the sails and velvet in the hulls of his marine paintings.
