Two Historic Transfer Decorated Staffordshire Child's Mugs, England, early 19th century, the first black transfer printed with oval portraits of "LA FAYETTE" and "WASHINGTON" wreathed in olive leaves and suspended beneath an American eagle holding an inscribed ribbon in its beak, the other red-brown transfer printed, centered with "MUNROE" in a cartouche bordered by flowers, beneath an American eagle, (minor imperfections), ht. 2 5/8 in. Provenance: The Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, Edward and Bertha Rose Collection of Ceramics. Sold to benefit the acquisition fund.
