Attributed to Thomas Chambers (American, ac. 1808-1866) Delaware Water Gap , c. 1840, a view of the natural wonder on the Delaware River in Pennsylvania and New York near Port Jervis, New York, unsigned, oil on canvas, 20 3/4 x 29 1/2 in., in a painted frame. Condition: Lined, minor retouch, craquelure. N.B. Thomas Chambers, born in London, emigrated to the United States in 1832. He worked as a landscape marine painter in the Boston, Albany, and New York City areas. His scenes cast heavy shadows and have a bold as well as decorative quality. His skies very often use salmon or purple clouds and he also frequently incorporated rock strewn foregrounds and spiky plants. The artist's fanciful style and favorite palette is evident in this painting.
