Parcel-gilt Silver Wine Ewer, China, 18th century, probably K'ang Hsi period (1662-1722), lobated form, body hammered from a sheet of silver with repousse and applied decoration, each panel with designs of landscapes with scholars, pavilions, flowering trees, Taoist longevity symbols, and various Buddhist iconography; the spout shaped like bamboo with two applied wires on either side resembling bamboo in leaf; the handle resembles a gnarled tree trunk; the lid surmounted by a Buddhist lion; areas of gilt applied in heavy sheets with chasing; the base engraved with two characters Hsi Yuan (Western garden), approx. wt. 18 oz., ht. 6 1/2 in. Note: There is a similar example in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
