Maurice Braun (American, 1877-1941) Sycamore in Autumn , In the California Desert Signed "Maurice Braun" l. r., titled (in pencil) on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 20 x 24 in. (50.5 x 60.8 cm), in a period frame. Condition: Minor loss u.r., scattered retouch, subtle surface grime, craquelure. N.B. Born in Hungary, Braun moved to New York City with his parents in 1881. He studied at the National Academy of Design and became a pupil of American Impressionist William Merritt Chase. Braun became a well respected portrait painter, but was interested in exploring other genres, so in 1910 he moved to the west coast. He set up a studio and art academy in San Diego, where he remained almost exclusively until his death in 1941.
