Charles Harsanyi (American, 1905-1973) Fallen Tree /A Monhegan View Signed "Harsanyi" l. r., titled, signed and dated "1948", label from the Salmagundi Club and Jospeh Luyber Galleries, New York, on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 20 x 30 in. (50.6 x 76.1 cm), framed. Condition: Surface grime, craquelure. N.B. Harsanyi was born in Tapoka, Hungary, and as a young man studied with A. Bankhard at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. He moved to the United States in 1947 and became a prominent member of the Audubon Artists Association, serving first as a juror and then as director. The lot is accompanied by catalogs from the Allied Artists of America Annual Exhibition, 1952, and Audubon Artists Annual Exhibition, 1953, as well as a letter from The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, Maryland, congratulating Harsanyi for winning second prize in the Annual Exhibition of Cumberland Valley Artists, 1949.
