Martha Wood Belcher (American, 19th Century) Portrait of Elizabeth Maginnis of Boston Monogrammed "MBW" l. r. Pastel on paper, sight size 17 1/2 x 12 1/2 in. (44.5 x 32.0 cm), framed. Condition: Scattered foxing, subtle toning, not examined out of frame. N.B. Martha Wood Belcher was born in England but immigrated to New York at the age of twelve. Her life long patron, Major Thomas B. Brooks sponsored her studies at the Peter Cooper Institute throughout the 1860s. She continued to refine her style while on a trip to Europe during the 1870s. She would later return to Europe with her artist daughter, Hilda, in 1913.
