After Thomas Hart Benton (American, 1889-1975), "Achelous & Hercules"-1947, seven acrylic on wood panels, unsigned. Monumental seven panel artwork after the American Regionalist mural commissioned for a Kansas City department store, Harzfeld's in the late 1940s. The original painting is currently housed and displayed at the Smithsonian American Art Museum on the second floor of the North Wing. Painting depicting a central Hercules figure shirtless attempting to grab a bull by the horns flanked by other workers helping to harness the untamed animal. Right size of the work with a large cornucopia overflowing with fruits and vegetables showing the bounty of the American Heartland, two young women in red and blue rest on top of the horn. A male figure at right kneels on the ground holding a basket of squash or other vegetables. Left of central scene with African American young man in blue shirt and pants straddling fence with tree in background in front of stylized rolling hill environment. Each with hooks on back. Each panel measures approximately 46" x 69". Overall measures approximately 46" x 483".
