American, Late 18th century. Collection of two state seals, both for the State of Georgia and dated 1799. Front with "STATE OF GEORGIA" above the coat of arms of the state (arch with 3 columns symbolizing the state's Constitution and three branches of government (legislative, executive, and judicial); words of the official state motto, "Wisdom, Justice, Moderation," are inscribed on scrolls that are wrapped around the columns. A man (possibly a soldier from the American Revolution) stands between the second and third columns, holding a drawn sword in his right hand, representing the military's defense of the Constitution. Opposite side of seal with "AGRICULTURE AND COMMERCE" on border around view of Georgia's coast emphasizing their export market, agricultural market with man near sheep, and internal domestic market.
