American, mid 19th century. An engraving entitled "Gettysburg: Repulse of Longstreet's Assault". Historically arranged by John B. Bachelder (American, 1825-1894) who commissioned the painting by James Walker (English, 1819-1889) which was then engraved by Henry Bryan Hall Jr. (English, 1808-1884). Published by John B. Bachelder in Boston, Massachusetts in 1876. Engraving depicts the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War with perspective from the rear of the Union army, with clusters of soldiers left, right, and center, punctuated by explosions all around, soldiers on horseback in the foreground, and canons on either side. Inscribed lower left "Painted by James Walker", lower center "Historically Arranged by John B. Bachelder", and lower right "Engraved by H.B. Hall, Jr.". Framed 24.25" x 43", unframed sight size 16.75" x 35.5".
