American, third quarter of 19th century. A hand colored American Civil War discharge certificate issued to John M. Dickerson who was a member of the 27th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, which served a nine month enlistment with the Union army. Script handwriting fills the center of the certificate detailing Dickerson's service, with enlistment beginning on September 13, 1862 and honorable discharge on July 2, 1863 "by reason of ex. of term". Text is surrounded by cartouches containing illustrations of civil war scenes including soldiers on horseback, on ships, and in battle on a field. A Bald Eagle surrounded by gold stars decorates the top of the certificate resting above a seal that reads "1861-Civil War-1865", and a portrait of Abraham Lincoln sits below the text with inscription "The Soldier's Friend". Inscribed lower left "Published Expressly For The Army and Navy Record Co." and lower right "Entered According to Act of Congress in the year 1883 by Pettibone Brothers Mfg.
