Two Painted Relief-Carved Figural Panels, Michael F. Kelly (b. 1897), Cold Spring, New York, mid-20th century, one depicting a bust of George Washington, inscribed "M. Kelly Mar. 18 1959" l.r.; the other a three-headed totem-like carving inscribed "M. Kelly 1961" l.l., "M. Kelly Cold Spring, N.Y." and "Wood = poplar aged 2 years before carving. Bought from housekeeper sawmill Putnam Valley , N.Y. 1959/M. Kelly" on the reverse, 26 x 17, 42 3/8 x 16 1/4 in. Note: Michael Kelly, a painter and a woodcarver, was a 1921 graduate of the Pratt Institute of Fine Arts in Brooklyn, where he won a scholarship to study in Europe. He returned to America in the mid-1920s and worked on projects in New York and Washington D.C. as a design assistant to Ezra Winter and others. He also produced pictorial records of Gloucester, Massachusetts, and the lower mid-Hudson River Valley.
