Carved and Painted Wooden Penguin, attributed to Charles Hart, Gloucester, Massachusetts, c. 1930, the figure with inset wooden eyes and beak, applied flippers, painted black and white, mounted on a square wooden base, weathered surface, (imperfections), ht. 17 5/8, base wd. 8 in. Literature: A similar penguin is illustrated in American Folk Sculpture, by Robert Bishop (E.P. Dutton & Co., New York), p. 177, before the maker was identified, and is now in the Smithsonian Institution.
