Theo Tobaisse (Israeli/French, b. 1927) Le Pantin et L'Oiseau Signed and dated "theo tobaisse 61" u.l., titled l.c. and on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 21 x 25 1/2 in. (53.3 x 64.7 cm), framed. Condition: Surface grime, craquelure. N.B. During World War II, Tobiasse and his family hid from the Nazis in a small Paris apartment. It was during this confinement that Tobiasse started drawing. Although he spent many years as a commercial artist, Tobiasse's first love was painting, which he focused on full time starting in 1961. His paintings are a blend of mythology, dreams, and Judaic and Biblical stories. Tobiasse has also created numerous stained glass windows and monumental sculptures for institutions in Strasbourg and Nice, and has held one-man shows in Paris, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, and Caracas.
