Snead Cast-Iron Open-Diving Helmet by Snead Company, Jersey City , painted black with gilt lettering, ht. 22 in. Note: Snead & Co produced this type of shallow water diving hat during the first hapf of the 20th century. Unlike other helmets which required heavy lead weights to sink them, the Snead helmet (weighing 27 kilograms) was made of cast iron and sank under its own weight.
