Bausch & Lomb Griffith Club Microscope, with lacquered-brass tube engraved Dr. H. P. Larkin , rack-and-pinion coarse focusing, fine focusing via sprung worm gear, circular black glass stage in nickel-plated mount, plano/concave reflector on lateral movement tailpiece calibrated in degrees, on tapering brass pillar with screw-thread to enameled cast-iron U-foot, ht. 10 in., in original fitted leather-covered case (leather lifting and missing on lid), No. 687, with gilt-tooled interior, containing two eyepieces, a Bausch & Lomb 1/4-inch objective and a Bausch & Lomb 3/4-inch objective, both in brass cannisters, (lacking one slide clip, the other detached). Note: Designed by Ezra H. Griffith of Fairport, N.Y., and manufactured by Bausch & Lomb, the Club microscope featured an unusual fine focus action. A worm gear on sprung steel rod is engaged or disengaged (via a milled brass thumbwheel) to mesh with a gear on the main focusing knob. The circular brass foot ( not present ) would have converted for use as a slide preparation turntable. The design was patented on December 14, 1886.
