Attributed to William Prior (Maine, Maryland, and Massachusetts, 1806-1873) Portrait of a Man, 1840-1850, Boston. Unsigned. Oil on academy board, the gentleman with light brown hair that extends to his full beard, wears a dark suit with a white collar, sight 16 1/2 x 11 1/4 in. in an original veneered frame. Condition: minor paint losses. Note: By the 1840s, the Prior family and brothers-in-law had moved to Boston. With the rise in popularity of the daguerreotype at the time, Prior worked with speed and assurance.
