American School, 19th Century Famous Race of the Dauntless, Vespa, and Coronet off Newport, Rhode Island. Unsigned, vessels identified on the bow, the title from a label affixed to the reverse. Oil on canvas, showing the three yachts with crews on deck with other sailing vessels in the distance, 40 1/4 x 45 1/4 in., in a molded giltwood frame. Condition: The canvas laid down on to Masonite, minor retouch to background. Note: Of the three vessels portrayed in this painting, the schooner yacht Coronet is the most celebrated. She won the third transatlantic race against the Dauntless in 1887, was the first American yacht to round Cape Horn, and twice circumnavigated the globe. She is the last remaining American schooner yacht of her age size and degree of preservation, having most of her original grand Victorian furnishings. She is also the oldest registered yacht in the United States and is currently undergoing restoration by her new owners, the International Yacht Restoration School of Newport.
