Rare Queen Anne Japanned Maple and Pine High Chest of Drawers, signed "Rob Davis" in script, Boston, Massachusetts, 1735-1739, this two-part piece includes an upper case consisting of a scrolled ogee molded cornice above two small drawers flanking a central highly elaborated concave drawer above two short drawers on three long, all with thumb-moldings and flanked by fluted pilasters and joined to the lower case by a shaped mid-molding above five drawers, two short examples over three lower drawers ,the central one with an arched concave center; over a skirt with two end flat-headed arches flanking a blocked center on four cabriole legs ending in deeply carved oval shaped feet on pads. The decorations consist of a background of vermilion streaked with black to simulate tortoiseshell and flat and bas-relief decoration in gilt. The flat embellishment includes gilt guilloche borders, silver line border outlining the drawer fronts and gilt shells. The raised Chinoiserie decoration consists of fanciful dogs, Chinese tea houses, boats, birds, Chinese figures and floral ornaments; the raised roosters are large, prominent and isolated as is typical of Davis work, (unrestored, some losses, old Chippendale replaced brasses), ht. 83, case wd. 39 1/4, wd. 42 5/8 at cornice, case dp. 22 1/4, dp. at cornice 24 in.
