Horace Bundy (Vermont and New Hampshire, 1814-1883) Portrait of George Henry (1848-1937) and Charles Albert Whitcomb (1851-1935) signed on reverse in black script "H. Bundy painter Winchendon, MA April 1852." Oil on canvas, the two seated children wearing a red dress and green suit with brass buttons respectively, holds a rattle and a horn, sight 29 1/2 x 24 in., in an original giltwood frame. Condition: Good, unlined, varnish inconsistencies. Provenance: This portrait was donated to the Massachusetts educational institution in 1985 by the estate of its owner. The institution has deaccessioned it from its collections and consigned it to Skinner. George Henry and Charles Albert Whitcomb were the sons of Fanny P. Buttrick and Henry Whitcomb. Note: Horace Bundy of Nashua, New Hampshire, very often made large black script notations on the reverse of his canvases, as in this case. In his later works, such as this example, he often used a painted oval to surround his subjects.
