American School, 19th Century Portrait of Ebenezer French (1787-1850). Unsigned. Oil on wood panel, the seated gentleman wears a black waistcoat, with a high standing collar and cravat, 26 x 24 in. (sight), in original giltwood frame. Condition: retouch, revarnished. Note: Ebenezer French, who was born in Boston, originally worked at the Boston Patriot newspaper. With Isaac Monroe, he founded the Baltimore Patriot newspaper, which was the first to publish The Star Spangled Banner. He volunteered in two defense campaigns at Fort McHenry from the British Fleet bombardment. In 1825 President John Quincy Adams appointed Ebenezer French to a State Department position.
