John Fabian Carlson (Swedish/American, 1875-1945) Derelicts, Kingston, New York Signed "John F. Carlson" l.r., Belgian canvas stamp, signed, titled and artist's stamp on the stretcher, identified on a label from Vose Galleries, Boston, on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 25 x 30 in. (63.5 x 76.2 cm), framed. Condition: Craquelure. Provenance: A private New York collection. N.B. John Fabian Carlson was an avid painter and teacher. Through his numerous school affiliations and his highly influential 1929 book, Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting he propounded the importance of painting landscapes in situ, rather than in the studio. Carlson is best known for his winter landscapes, executed in a tonalist mode and capturing the constantly shifting light of nature and its resulting emotive qualities. Here, Carlson has applied his technique to a more urban setting, imbuing it with the same sensibility that he applied to woodlands and fields. This lot is accompanied by a copy of Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting where Derelicts is reproduced on page 84.
