Condition: Fox mark l.c., creasing, not examined out of frame. N.B. Diego Rivera was one of the most prominent Mexican painters of the twentieth century. In his youth, Rivera studied at the National School of Fine Arts in Mexico City, and then traveled to Europe fueled as much by his interest in politics as in art. He was greatly concerned with the working classes as both subject matter and audience for his work. The scale of mural painting and the public spaces they naturally required fascinated Rivera. While in Italy he studied fresco techniques, and upon his return to Mexico, Rivera created several murals depicting social themes, including those at the National Palace in Mexico City and at the Palace of Cortes in Cuernavaca. Even though Rivera was working on many large mural projects, he continued painting on a smaller scale, frequently depicting scenes of Mexican life. Not surprisingly he returned to the subject of children repeatedly. Some of these images depicted children busy with domestic tasks, while others are more portrait like. All reflect his simple, almost iconic style.
