Maxfield Parrish is one of the early twentieth century's best known painters. While attending the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Parrish decided to pursue a career in illustration and audited classes at the Drexel Institute under Howard Pyle, the nation's leading illustrator of the time. Parrish illustrated several books, and also received numerous commissions for calendars and magazines. Parrish's paintings combined romanticism, glowing colors, and realistic treatment of figures. His works were so popular that during the 1920s, one out of every four households had a Parrish image in it. Parrish's reputation even attracted other artists to his home near Cornish, New Hampshire.
