Helena Sturtevant was one of Rhode Island's most prominent landscape and marine painters. She studied at the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston with Edmund Tarbell, and then at the Colarossi Academy in Paris. Following her schooling, she returned to Rhode Island and set up a studio on the grounds of her grandfather's estate in Newport. The International Cup Races, held near Newport, provided the subject matter for many of her paintings. Later in her career, she became the Director of the School of the Art Association of Newport.
