Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen (American, 1850-1921) Larchmont Signed and dated "A. Jacobsen 1905" l.r. Oil on canvas, 22 x 36 in. (55.8 x 91.4 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure. N.B. Jacobsen was born to a family of violin makers in Denmark, but immigrated to America to avoid compulsory military service. His success as a marine artist came relatively easily. He received commissions for ship portraits from owners and captains, and readily expanded to steamship lines, including The Fall River and The White Star Lines, who commissioned Jacobsen to portray their entire fleets. The Larchmont, built in Bath, Maine in 1885 and originally called the Cumberland, was a side-wheel steamer owned by the Joy Steamship Line, and ran between New York City and Providence, Rhode Island. She was over 250 feet in length and weighed upwards of 1,600 pounds. She sank in a winter storm after being rammed by a schooner off of Block Island, Rhode Island in 1907.
